In this talk, Pascale Arpin reflects on burnout, ambition, and what it means to build a creative life on your own terms.
Five years after speaking at one of the Ottawa Design Club’s earliest events, Pascal returns with a very different perspective. After years of relentless sign painting work, touring, and building momentum, she hit a breaking point. Anxiety around client emails, exhaustion, and creative resentment forced her to step away from the business she had worked so hard to build.
What followed was a series of disappearances. Months spent in Nice, Athens, Berlin, and New York. A grant from the Ontario Arts Council. A renewed commitment to oil painting. An attempt to pivot fully into the fine art world through MFA applications to top American schools. Acceptance letters. Then reality. Financial barriers, political instability, and the weight of uncertainty brought that dream to a halt.
Back home, life continued to unravel in unpredictable ways. Health scares, unstable housing, heartbreak, and stalled plans. Instead of doubling down on reinvention, Pascal made an unexpected decision. She bought a home in Orléans, twenty years after leaving, choosing stability, family, and groundedness over constant motion.
She closes by redefining what a good life looks like. Not prestige. Not hustle. Not escape. But balance. Health. Creative autonomy. And the courage to pivot when life pivots you first.
