Create the Damn Lines

In this talk, Felouli reflects on experimentation, creative freedom, and learning to make things without needing to know where they will lead.

As a kid, Felouli stopped drawing because he was afraid of making mistakes. Years later, discovering Photoshop and Ctrl-Z changed his relationship with creativity entirely. Suddenly, mistakes weren’t permanent. He could experiment, fail, undo, and try again.

That mindset followed him into a career in web design and freelancing, where he eventually achieved everything he thought he wanted: dream clients, good money, stability, and freedom. But reaching those goals left him unexpectedly unfulfilled. Stepping away from creativity as a full-time career gave him permission to make work for himself again, from hundreds of sticker designs to handmade wooden figurines, without needing every idea to become a business.

He closes by returning to the fear that stopped him from drawing as a kid. Creativity, he argues, isn’t about staying inside someone else’s lines or waiting until you’re good enough to begin. It comes from making something, getting it wrong, trying again, and eventually creating the damn lines yourself.
