Event 0022

Build It Anyway

Tickets

Creative careers don't begin when everything is in place.

The timing isn't perfect. The opportunities aren't obvious. The community you need might not exist yet. You don't always know if an idea will work, if a move is the right one, or if anyone will show up. At some point, you have to decide whether to wait for certainty or start building anyway.

This evening explores what happens when creatives stop looking for permission and begin creating the conditions they need to move forward. Our speakers have each taken very different paths, but they share a willingness to make the first move before the outcome was guaranteed. They built communities, changed directions, started over, and discovered that momentum often comes from action rather than confidence.

Whether you're creating something from scratch, rebuilding after a setback, or trying to carve out a place that doesn't exist yet, Build It Anyway is about trusting that the work doesn't begin once everything is figured out. It begins the moment you decide to start.

Reserve your tickets early on Eventbrite.

Amanda Thirkill

Amanda Thirkill is an Ottawa-based photographer and award-winning entrepreneur specializing in portrait, lifestyle, brand, and commercial photography. She is particularly drawn to projects that highlight people, small businesses, and meaningful stories, including her self-produced annual International Women's Day portrait series, casting a spotlight on women in Ottawa through portraits and personal words of inspiration.

Originally from Sudbury, Amanda spent the first decade of her career working in communications, PR and marketing, which brought her to Toronto where she worked as a media producer and project manager. These experiences have shaped both her creative and business approach as a photographer.

After sampling a few corners of Ontario, Amanda eventually put down roots in Ottawa, where she lives with her husband, Alemayhu, and her step-cat, Cam. Amanda can be found in her truest form locally while sampling Ottawa's pizza scene, and rurally at any cottage, but particularly at 'camp' with family on Manitoulin Island.
