Event 0007

Beyond The Mark

Tickets

To kick off the 2023 year, the Ottawa Design Club is bringing you a night of inspirational stories and a reminder that true art is about creating an impact beyond the visuals. Three Ottawa speakers will provide a glimpse into the unique ways their art interacts with and supports the community, making a difference in people's lives, no matter how big or small. Each will leave you with a lasting urge to get out there and shoot beyond the mark in your own work.

Here’s what you can expect at our upcoming speaker event:

Make new creative friends! The first hour of the event is dedicated to networking. Don’t be scared, we promise the ambiance will be super laid back. Grab a drink, have some food and have a chat with a stranger!

Listen to inspiring speakers!
Whether it’s by enhancing the character of our city through art, creating a space for folks to grow and celebrate their true selves, or connecting emotionally with the community through thoughtful brands, our speakers all exemplify the concept of going beyond the mark in their creative practice.

Get yourself a zine!
Zines 0002 to 0005 will be available for sale at the event.

Have some food and drinks!
Light food will be provided at the event, drinks are for sale at the bar.

IMPORTANT: Please stay home if you’re not feeling well or have symptoms associated with COVID-19. Masks will be available for anyone who wishes to wear one.

Should any speakers fall sick, the event will still proceed. Tickets are non-refundable and any updates will be communicated to you as early as possible.

Dom Laporte

Dominic is a Canada-based muralist and illustrator whose work combines traditional painting and mixed-media techniques. His work largely focuses on themes embodying the natural world and, most recently, exploring symbiotic relationships found in nature and using those to carry out more in-depth concepts and narratives. Over the past decade, he has expanded his mural practice on an international level and developed a distinct style that’s become a familiar feature of Ottawa’s urban environment. His work has always been inspired by his direct surroundings and the murals allow him to reach audiences who may not frequent art galleries. He has produced large-scale murals commissioned by Canada’s Museum of Science & Technology, Live Nation Canada, Street Art Toronto, The Royal Canadian Navy, Bank of Montreal, Adidas, The Canadian Medical Association, the City of Ottawa Light Rail Transit, and the Nelson International Mural Festival, among others.

Dominic’s passion for community-based and accessible art forms compliments his background in traditional painting. He has exhibited artwork and installed mural projects throughout Ottawa, Toronto, British Columbia, Québec, Barcelona, and Sayulita, Mexico. Dominic and his partner Anaϊs Labrèque are founders of DRIFT, a mural production and public art company based in Ottawa. The focus at DRIFT Mural Co. is to beautify communities and celebrate the local identities they encounter through public art initiatives.

Mariah Landers

Mariah is an Ottawa-based tattoo artist and the owner of Obscura Tattoo. Tattooing since 2003, she obtained her license in Rhode Island in 2005, began an apprenticeship, and never looked back. Since then, she has traveled around Canada and the US spreading her art, with plans to slowly tattoo her way around the world. She opened Obscura in 2020, and although it has grown significantly since then, she has always maintained its original mission to be a space focused on growth, community, celebration of self, and creating art. Her style is based in traditional tattooing principles with an illustrative and ornamental feel, and a preference for black or black and grey ink.

A lifelong learner, she holds certifications in skin anatomy/physiology, blood borne pathogen and cross contamination prevention, standard precautions and hand hygiene, trauma informed body modification and tattooing, and CPR/first aid.
