Collaboration is a Superpower

By Kyla Reda

Collaboration is all around us, from the music we listen to, to the buildings we live in, to the stores we shop at. Where would we be if we had singers but no guitarists? Or architects with no construction workers to bring their designs to life? What if the Beatles had all decided to pursue solo careers instead of forming a band?

The truth is, two minds are better than one. Every person has something special to bring to the table, born from their own unique experiences and skills. Every person has the power to create something wonderful. Now if we take that wonderful thing and combine it with someone else’s wonderful thing, we have something new, innovative, and spectacular. This is what we wanted to explore by creating Zine 0005 - Collaboration.

Our zines have always been a collaborative effort, from each team member who designed, curated, and edited them, to the artists who submitted their work to be featured, to the printers who made them tangible. The purpose of the Ottawa Design Club as a whole is to spread art and connect creatives with other creatives. By reading Zine 0005, you, too, will be collaborating with us to make that vision a reality.

After publishing five zines, we’ve learned a lot about letting our curiosity and imaginations guide us. We believe in surrounding ourselves with others who will not only hear our ideas, but take them a step further. Collaboration is powerful—in fact, collaboration is a superpower that you can wield simply by embracing vulnerability, keeping an open mind, and believing in both yourself and the people around you.

We’re immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished with our zines. Having the opportunity to bounce our ideas off of each other has allowed us to keep improving on each issue, creating a brand new experience each time. From Zine 0001, our prototype, to Zine 0002, where we supplemented the visual content with the inclusion of a stick of bubblegum to chew while reading, to fit our theme of nostalgia. With Zine 0003, we provided a more immersive experience by including a DJ mix specifically curated to go along with the zine’s content. Zine 0004 brought the addition of QR codes carrying bonus content online, a tea packet to continue the multi-sensory experience with both scent and taste, and an immersive experience within the zine. Now with Zine 0005, we have a holographic cover, gatefold pages, and a newly designed font we’ve given you access to!

Every single one of these ideas was born through collaboration. In this way, we felt that it was fitting for our final zine of this series to be a celebration of collaboration in all its forms. We have loved creating zines and sharing them with all of you. But now, we’re ready to take the next step in our collaborative and creative journey. We’re ready to once again face a new project with both excitement and nerves, to challenge ourselves and make mistakes, and to ultimately create something that we know you’ll love. We hope you’ll join us by taking the next steps in your own collaborative journey too.

Grab your copy of our final zine (for now), and stay tuned for what’s next from the Ottawa Design Club!

What to Expect from Zine 0005

Zine 0005 - Collaboration features multi-dimensional artworks which combine mediums such as photography and poetry, music and graphic design, and even simply multiple minds towards the same medium. It is our first issue in which each work is a collaborative creation by multiple artists. In fact, for the first time ever, even the zine curation itself was a collaborative effort between the Ottawa Design Club and Debaser.

Continuing the tradition of the issues before it, Zine 0005 delivers a multi-sensorial experience through the addition of QR codes and gatefold pages with extra content, a holographic cover to feast your eyes on, and a candy treat to enjoy while reading. The zine comes packed with goodies, from the content itself, to a unique, limited-edition theme sticker, and access to a brand new font designed by our club founders and their collaborators, which can be previewed in the zine.

Thank You to Our Collaborators

This new issue is by far the craziest zine yet and required a lot of coordination to come to life. A huge thank you to Priya Gurnani and Sandra Ngenge Dusabe for helping us with the curation of Zine 0005. Your collaboration was much needed in this difficult selection process.

We experimented and created different opportunities to finance our zine. Thanks to Jennifer Bernard for lending us your studio for our ODChillout event. Thank you to everyone who showed up, your ticket money was repurposed to help print this zine.

To Studio 20/20 for collaborating on the On-Set Mindset workshop. So much creative juice under the same roof. This event not only inspired us, but allowed us to re-invest in this zine. To Debaser who were part of the initial brainstorming sessions and agreed to combine our projects together.

To Rémi Thériault for the photographic magic and zine support. House of Common has been a part of our journey since day one. We are so grateful to have the opportunity to collaborate with you. To SAW Gallery for offering us a a safe space to allow us to grow as a community. We are lucky to be able to look up to you.

Thank you to all of you, dear readers. This zine is a labour of love we dedicate to you. We hope it will inspire you.
